Weekly Status:

Our group is still slightly behind schedule.  We just received this past Friday the hardware which we purchased that will allow our group to test our proposed design solution for the extraction of streaming video and header information from the digital camera to the laptop. Since we received this hardware later than anticipated we are behind schedule in the testing of our design, but we are still making a good deal of progress with the program.

We have begun testing various software programs to extract and encode the streaming information from the digital camera’s “fire-wire” output port directly onto the laptop computer.  We originally thought that we could use Windows Movie Maker software, but after testing we found that program is inadequate.   We are currently testing a few other software packages that seem to be more suited to our needs.  We are leaning towards a software program called PowerVCR2 which records and encodes in the format that we need, but we will need to complete further testing of those programs this week and choose the one that is best suited to our project design.

This week we will also acquire a digital video camera that will allow us to perform the testing of the second part of our design, which is to use software or a codec to extract time reference information from a streaming source.   We are going to test source code that we found which should allow us to find the time information in an MPEG-1 stream.   Completing the testing, and choosing which two programs are best suited for our needs will be the major focus of our group.
