Design Proposal: Abstract

We present a design for the next generation campus network for the Stevens Institute of Technology. The current infrastructure at Stevens is inadequate to scale to the future needs of the population and several existing components are key single points of failure that can render services unusable until their repair. Currently there are security issues on both the wireless TreeNET and the existing Ethernet based networks which are directly related to the core design and implementation of the network. We will provide several multi-phase solutions which will allow the campus IT department to choose which they can best implement given existing and future resources. We will employ techniques such as edge media deployment, migration of faculty to separate networks to better protect against foreign and local attack, increased use of cryptography, traffic shaping on Internet traffic to provide quality of service and tolerance for network load spikes, and finally load balancing of existing services to increase redundancy and performance. We will simulate each solution using the NS2 network simulation package to confirm its design. We expect our solutions to allow the Stevens Institute of Technology to scale to the current and future needs of it's population as well as accelerate its Internet based course initiatives by providing services that are secure, reliable, and cost effective.
