The main aim of this project is to develop a plan to implement voice over IP technology on the Stevens network. This technology would allow students to make reduced cost phone calls to any normal phone number and free calls to other phones located on other campus networks connected to a new backbone system. The plan we use should also present a dramatic cost savings over the existing phone system. The students would also be able to enjoy the many enhanced features of an IP phone, including caller ID, directory lookup services, and a constant phone number when the student moves from one dorm room to another. Over the fall semester, the group explored three different approaches to implementing voice over IP at Stevens: a full network upgrade with normal IP phones, a marginal network upgrade that would minimize hardware purchased, and the layout of “soft phones” that would work on existing computers. Through careful work and analysis of the benefits and costs of each program, the group decided that a full network upgrade would be the best option to maximize future expandability and available features. Once the group settled on a plan, we developed five different phases that we would implement in the spring semester. Phase One would be to setup a CallManager and two IP phones on the same subnet and place a call between the two phones. Phase Two would attempt to do the same thing, but this time the phone would be on different subnets, for instance one phone in Tech and one in Davis. Phase Three would be to attempt to use internal callspace by calling a normal campus phone with an IP phone without leaving the campus phone system. Phase Four will attempt to place a call from an IP phone on campus to an external line, such as a cell phone. Phase Five will attempt to implement a semi-permanent IP phone system in a section of campus, such as a faculty department or one building.
