It is a combination of a sensory network and a server. The system will be able to sense mail being put into a box, then send a signal to the server with information about which box received mail, which can then send a notification to the owner of the box telling them that they have received new mail in their box. This notification will be determined based on the user's preferences, but it will usually be an email, or a text message to a cellphone.
