The task of scheduling courses and exams is a problem for both the registrar who creates the schedules, and the students who follow them. For the registrar, the process is a lot of manual work. This requires much studying of the courses to try to find optimal fits for such metrics as room size. Since this currently is a manual process at Stevens, the registrar may not be able to find the “best” schedule. This in turn, affects students when they need to sit in crowded classrooms and have conflicting final exams.

The goal of this project is to automate and improve this process. The Registrar Scheduler will follow the current process of scheduling as stated by the registrar so that there is continuity between the old and new systems. Apart from automation, the system will feature certain improvements on scheduling. Common scheduling algorithms from computer science theory will be used to find the optimal fit of students in classrooms.

In the end, the system will carry out the process of scheduling classes and exams. For classes and exams, the optimization procedure will be run when changes are made to the schedule. Since this is a first attempt at automation, it will be hard to get it perfect the first time [1]. Hence, the system will allow manual changes to the schedules after the automatic processes provide a recommendation. The project will also be integrated into the current system in place so that it will actually be used by the school.
