Home consumers and small businesses cannot predict when catastrophic data loss will occur. Since commercial data backup systems are expensive and require professional maintenance and support, there is a market demand to engineer a solution that is feature-rich, easy to use, and low cost. Thus, a localized backup solution will be developed to provide home consumers and small businesses with easy immediate access and complete control of their backups.

The Linksys NSLU2 product is a network storage link for Universal Serial Bus (USB) 2.0 hard disk drives providing the ability to add storage space to end consumer and small business networks. This network device provides limited backup support, network storage, and web browser access features. The Stevens Senior Design Group 5 will provide additional features to extend the usability and cost benefit of this network device. In accordance with the Berkeley Software Distribution (BSD) & General Public License (GPL) software licensing models, a custom firmware solution with an accompanying Linux Distribution will be developed and adapted for the NSLU2 under the strict management of Concurrent Version System (CVS).
